Disputes over workers' compensation benefits often center on an injured workers' medical diagnosis and care. The doctor who performs the CME is chosen by the Commissioner, and the impartial physician shall examine the employee and review the medical records submitted by the parties and issue a report. The injured person may provide previous medical records and other information so that the physician chosen has the fullest possible picture of the injury and the care the injured worker will need to recover.
Physicians who perform a CME have no doctor-patient relationship with the injured worker.
In many workers' compensation cases, insurance companies schedule an "independent medical examination" or "IME.
In Connecticut, some advocates have even recommended that these exams drop the term "independent" and use "respondent" instead, reflecting the fact that they're called for by the employer.
The examination rules are the same as for CME:
The impartial physician shall examine the employee and review the medical records submitted by the parties and issue a report. The injured person may provide previous medical records and other information so that the physician chosen has the fullest possible picture of the injury and the care the injured worker will need to recover.
Physicians who perform a RME/IME have no doctor-patient relationship with the injured worker.
